How a Volcano Once Changed the Entire World’s Climate

In April 1815, a mountain in Indonesia exploded with such force that it changed the course of human history. Its global aftershocks would ripple for years, transforming weather, agriculture, and even art. The dark skies inspired both despair and creativity. In Switzerland, where volcanic haze turned day into twilight, a group of young writers gathered to pass the time indoors. Among them was Mary Shelley, who began crafting Frankenstein, a story born from literal darkness. Painters like J.M.W. Turner captured the strange, fiery sunsets in their art. Unwittingly, they’d preserved the atmospheric fingerprints of Tambora’s eruption.
